How to Measure Your Bed Before Buying a Quilt Set
A quilt can have the perfect pattern and color, yet still look wrong if it barely covers the mattress or hangs too close to the floor. Before choosing your next quilt set, take a few minutes to measure your bed. Knowing its actual dimensions—and how much coverage you want—makes finding the right fit much easier.
1. Start with Your Mattress Width and Length
Remove your current quilt and any bulky bedding so you can clearly see the mattress edges. Using a flexible measuring tape, record:
-
Width: Measure across the mattress from one side to the other.
-
Length: Measure from the head of the mattress to the foot.
Keep the tape straight and measure edge to edge. If you use a mattress topper, leave it in place so your measurements reflect the bed you actually sleep on.
Your mattress size label is a useful starting point, but the quilt’s listed dimensions matter more. Two quilts labeled “Queen” may offer different amounts of coverage.
2. Measure the Mattress Height
Next, measure from the top sleeping surface to the bottom edge of the mattress. Include the height of your topper, if you have one.
This measurement helps you determine how far the quilt needs to hang to cover the mattress sides. A deeper mattress requires more fabric than a thinner one, even when both have the same width and length.
Decide whether you want the quilt to stop at the mattress bottom, overlap a bed skirt, or extend farther down the sides. If you have a decorative bed frame, you may prefer a shorter drop that leaves it visible.
3. Choose Your Preferred Side Drop
The drop is the amount of quilt that hangs over the edge of the bed.
For a tailored look, choose a drop that just covers the mattress. For a more relaxed, layered look, allow extra fabric below the mattress edge.
To calculate your target quilt width, use:
Quilt width = mattress width + left-side drop + right-side drop
For example, if your mattress is 60 inches wide and you want an 18-inch drop on each side:
60 + 18 + 18 = 96 inches
Look for a quilt approximately 96 inches wide.
You can also work backward from a product listing:
Side drop = (quilt width − mattress width) ÷ 2
A 90-inch-wide quilt centered on a 60-inch-wide mattress would provide approximately 15 inches of coverage on each side.
4. Calculate the Length You Need
Quilt length depends on where you position the top edge and how much fabric you want hanging at the foot.
If the quilt starts at the head edge of the mattress, use:
Quilt length = mattress length + desired foot drop
For an 80-inch-long mattress with an 18-inch foot drop, the target length would be 98 inches.
If you prefer to start the quilt below your pillows, measure from that starting point to the foot of the mattress, then add your desired foot drop. If you fold the quilt back at the top, allow additional length for the fold.
A footboard may limit how freely the quilt hangs, so consider whether you will drape or tuck the fabric at the foot.
5. Compare Measurements with the Product Size Chart
Once you know your target dimensions, compare them with the quilt’s actual width and length—not just the size name.
Check that the listing clearly identifies which measurement is the width. Do not assume you can rotate a quilt to improve the fit: directional prints, borders, or quilting patterns may look different when turned sideways.
If your ideal measurements fall between sizes, compare the resulting drop for each option. A larger quilt may provide better coverage, but check that it will not trail on the floor or hide details of your bed frame.
Also read the care instructions and any manufacturer guidance about shrinkage. Avoid adding an arbitrary allowance unless the brand recommends it.
6. Check the Pillow Shams and Set Contents
A quilt set’s fit includes more than the quilt itself. Measure the pillows you plan to use and compare them with the listed sham dimensions.
Check how many shams come with your chosen size, too. Set contents can vary, and pillows or decorative cushions shown in product photos may not be included.

Your Before-You-Buy Checklist
Before placing your order, confirm:
-
Mattress width, length, and height, including any topper
-
Preferred drop on both sides and at the foot
-
Quilt dimensions and pattern orientation
-
Pillow sham dimensions and quantity
-
Care instructions and included pieces
A few simple measurements can make a big difference. Choose your quilt set around your bed’s dimensions and your preferred coverage, and you’ll be better prepared to create a comfortable, neatly finished bedroom.
