How Much Should a Quilt Hang Over the Side of the Bed?

A quilt can have the perfect pattern and a wonderfully soft feel, yet still look too small once it is on your bed. Often, the difference comes down to its overhang—the amount of fabric that falls beyond the edge of the mattress.

For a balanced everyday look, about 10–15 inches of overhang on each side is a useful starting point. However, the right amount depends on your mattress thickness, bed frame, and how much coverage you prefer. Here is how to find a fit that works for your bed.

What Does Quilt Overhang Mean?

Quilt overhang, also called the “drop,” is the portion of the quilt that hangs down the sides or foot of the bed.

Side overhang is measured from the top edge of the mattress, not from the bottom of the bed frame. That distinction matters: a 12-inch drop may fully cover a thinner mattress but leave part of a thicker mattress exposed.

There is no single correct drop for every bedroom. Some people prefer a neat, tailored appearance, while others enjoy a longer, more relaxed drape.

How Much Overhang Looks Best?

Use these ranges as styling guidelines rather than strict sizing rules:

Desired Look Approximate Drop on Each Side What to Expect
Short and tailored 8–10 inches Shows more of the mattress or bed frame
Balanced everyday coverage 10–15 inches Provides a moderate drape without excessive fabric
Long and generous 15–20 inches Covers more of the bed’s sides for a fuller appearance

Always compare the drop with your actual mattress depth. If your mattress is 14 inches thick, a 10-inch drop will not reach its lower edge.

For coverage that extends slightly below the mattress, aim for a drop equal to the mattress depth plus a few extra inches.

How to Calculate the Right Quilt Width

The easiest way to choose a quilt is to work from measurements rather than size labels.

Quilt width = mattress width + twice your desired side drop

For example, suppose your queen mattress is 60 inches wide and you want a 14-inch drop on each side:

60 + 14 + 14 = 88 inches

A quilt approximately 88 inches wide would provide that coverage when centered on the mattress.

You can also check a quilt you are considering:

Side drop = (quilt width − mattress width) ÷ 2

A 90-inch-wide quilt on a 60-inch-wide mattress would have an approximate 15-inch drop on each side. Actual drape may vary slightly with loft, layering, and how the quilt sits on the bed.

Don’t Forget the Foot of the Bed

The drop at the foot depends on the quilt’s length and where you position its top edge.

Unlike side overhang, you generally should not divide the extra length in half. Most quilts are positioned near the head of the mattress, with the remaining length falling over the foot.

If an 80-inch-long mattress is covered by a 96-inch-long quilt aligned with its head edge, the approximate foot drop is 16 inches. Folding the quilt back near the pillows changes that coverage.

A footboard may hide a shorter drop, while an open-ended bed makes the quilt’s length more noticeable.

Consider Your Mattress and Bed Frame

Thick mattresses and toppers: Measure the full height, including your topper. Extra depth uses up more of the quilt’s drop.

Platform beds: A shorter or moderate drop can keep the frame visible and create a clean outline.

Beds with exposed foundations: A longer quilt may help cover the foundation, but measure the entire area you want hidden. A bed skirt is another option.

Low beds: Check the distance from the mattress top to the floor so an oversized quilt does not drag.

Should You Size Up?

Sizing up can help if you have a deep mattress, prefer generous coverage, or share the bed and want more fabric. However, a larger size label does not guarantee the right fit.

Compare the quilt’s listed width and length with your measurements. A quilt may be wide enough but too long, or long enough without providing the side coverage you need.

For cotton quilts, also check whether the dimensions are listed before or after washing and follow the care instructions. Do not assume every quilt will shrink by the same amount.

Find Your Preferred Drop Before Buying

Place an existing blanket on your bed and adjust it until the drape looks right. Measure from the mattress edge to the blanket’s lower edge, then use that measurement to calculate your ideal quilt width.

The best fit should give you the coverage you want, suit your bed’s proportions, and feel comfortable every night.
