What Size Quilt Works Best for a Deep Mattress?

A quilt can have the right bed-size label and still look too small. If your mattress is especially thick or has a plush topper, a standard quilt may leave the sides exposed and make the bed look unfinished.

The best quilt for a deep mattress is one that provides enough width and length for your preferred coverage. Before choosing a size, take a few simple measurements to find the fit that works for your bed.

Why Mattress Depth Matters

Quilt sizing involves more than the length and width of your mattress. Its depth affects how far the quilt needs to hang to cover the sides.

Picture two queen beds with identical sleeping surfaces. One has a slim mattress, while the other has a thick pillow top and an additional topper. The same quilt will hang farther down the first bed and sit noticeably higher on the second.

This is why choosing a quilt by the words “queen” or “king” alone can be misleading. Always check the product’s actual dimensions.

How to Measure Your Bed for a Quilt

Use a measuring tape to record three measurements:

  • Mattress width: Measure from one side of the sleeping surface to the other.

  • Mattress length: Measure from the head of the mattress to the foot.

  • Desired drop: Measure from the top edge of the mattress down to where you want the quilt to end.

Include your mattress topper when measuring the drop. If you want the quilt to hide the bottom edge of the mattress, measure slightly beyond that point.

For a more accurate visual check, drape a sheet over the bed and adjust its edges until you like the coverage. Then measure the area you want your quilt to cover.

A Simple Formula for Choosing Quilt Size

For a quilt positioned near the head of the mattress, use these formulas as a starting point:

Quilt width = mattress width + twice the desired side drop

Quilt length = mattress length + desired drop at the foot

For example, suppose your mattress measures 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. If you want an 18-inch drop on both sides and at the foot:

Measurement Calculation Target size
Quilt width 60 + 18 + 18 96 inches
Quilt length 80 + 18 98 inches

A quilt measuring approximately 96 × 98 inches would provide that coverage when laid flat and centered, with its top edge aligned with the head of the mattress.

If you fold the quilt back near the pillows, allow extra length for the fold. If you prefer less coverage at the foot, adjust the length accordingly.

Should You Size Up?

Sizing up can work well, but it is better to compare measurements than automatically buy the next bed size.

An oversized queen quilt may provide enough coverage for a deep queen mattress. A king quilt may also work, although its proportions could create more overhang on the sides than you want.

Before choosing a larger size, consider:

  • Bed height: A generous quilt may brush the floor on a low bed.

  • Bed frame: Wide overhang can hide decorative side rails.

  • Footboard: Extra length may bunch up against a tall footboard.

  • Shared sleeping space: Additional width can give two sleepers more coverage.

“ oversized” is not a fixed measurement across every collection. Read the listed width and length, and check which dimension runs across the bed.

Match the Drop to Your Bedroom Style

The right quilt size also depends on how you want the finished bed to look.

For a Clean, Tailored Look

Choose a quilt that covers the mattress and ends near its bottom edge. This keeps the bed frame visible and creates a neat silhouette.

For a Soft, Layered Look

Allow a longer drop and pair the quilt with sheets or a lightweight blanket. Floral bedding can become the focal point, while neutral layers help balance the pattern.

For a Bed with a Bed Skirt

The quilt only needs to overlap the top of the skirt enough to avoid an exposed gap. You do not need a floor-length quilt to achieve full coverage.

Check Fabric and Care Instructions

Dimensions matter, but so does how the quilt behaves after washing. Cotton quilts may experience some shrinkage, depending on the fabric, construction, and finishing process.

Check whether the product is described as prewashed and follow its care instructions. Avoid relying on a quilt that only just meets your minimum measurements, especially if the manufacturer notes possible shrinkage.

Choose by Measurements, Not Just the Label

The best quilt for a deep mattress gives you the coverage you want without awkward bunching or excessive overhang. Measure your bed, decide on the drop, and compare those numbers with the quilt’s listed dimensions.

Whether you prefer a crisp, tailored finish or softly layered floral bedding, the right proportions help your bed look comfortable, balanced, and complete.
